American Dream

After being independent, for sure, every country must have dreams and way of life of their own. And so does America. The term American Dream was first used by James Truslow Adams, an American historian, in his book “The Epic of America” published in 1931. His notoriously quote is, “But there has been also the American Dream, that dream of a land in which life should be better and richer and fuller for every man, with opportunity for each according to ability or achievement-- it is not a dream of motor cars and high wages merely, but a dream of social order in which man and each woman shall be able to attain the fullest stature of which they are innately capable, and be recognized by others for what they are, regardless of the fortuitous circumstances of birth or position.”

The term American Dream referred to the complex beliefs, religious promises, and political and social expectation. There are so many views come from people. For some, American Dream referred to becoming wealthy and the ability to achieve everything if one works hard enough for it. And for the others, it is a dream about living a simple and happy life, being faith and equality, being free and having unlimited opportunity in America.

Though American declaration was proclaimed on July 4 1776 however, British still didn't acknowledge the declaration. Hence, America had to struggle againts Britrish as colony. The term American Dream by James Truslow Adams in the book The Epic of America (1931) first emerged in the declaration text of Independent in essential that all people is same “all men are created equal”. To get rid of the freedom of each individuals was what separated the United underlying religious affair and state affairs. So they came together and consolidated to fight against British. Humans have a particular grace given by the Creator "endowed by their Creator with certain Rights" including life, liberty, and happiness "Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness". So the American Dream is a national ethos of the American people who dream of a better life.

The American dream was written in the James Truslow Adam’s book in 1931 tittled The Epic of America.  In that book stated that American dream is that dream of a land in which life should be better and richer and fuller for everyone, with opportunity for each according to ability or achievement (www.loc.gov). Jamestown founder in 1607 matters more than what happened in that late-booming city of Philadelphia in 1776. Believed tha American life was took root there by the strong local government, the pluralism of the religions, and a comperative high living standard, even for the slaves. That was what inspired the American dream, to be better and richer and fuller life for everyone. That dream was codified as the persuit of happiness which affirmed, not created, in 1776. And ever since,  the American dream has been functioned as a banner of the Declaration of the Independence (http://hnn.us//). And in 1931 it was introduced wider by James Adam trhough his saga.

After World War II many people believe that  American Dream was achieved. On that time all of the world knows that american dream brougt american people to the wealthiest. But how about nowadays? We have to ask, is it still American Dream who can help their people from unemployment and poverty in America? With the concept of “The American Dream” everyone in America deserve prosperety and walfare. But in fact, there are still lot of people in America suffer for their life. For example, its hard to find new job and higher education has become ‘luxury-prized necessity’ (Everding, 2014). Now in America rich people become richer and poor people should be able to survive for their life even its not easy for them. So, maybe now American Dream just live in poor people’s mind. Its because they still dont catch their dream. They still struggle for their happiness, prosperety and walfare. They working hard to improve their life and even for their family. In spite of it, the American dream might still have its positive aspects. It could serve as an motivation for many people and keep them from giving up hope of reaching their personal goal (Bokelmann, 2014).

The American Dream was inevitably known as ethos for American people. The way American people behave, made choices all of them is based on American Dream. Actually this ethos is consisted of a set of rights for American people to chase their dream. This ethos is became a justification for people to use their right (in this case their freedom) to do everything regarding on their motivation on chasing the dream itself. James Truslow Adams in his book called The Epic of America is emphasizing equal opportunity for everyone, an opportunity to achieve something (www.loc.gov, accessed on March 18th 2014).

A lot of people now concerning the American Dream as a Material Dream, the pursuit of actually own and earns more. Everything is based on how much you can get, how much wealth and fortune you will get. But for particular people, the dream itself is guiding them into a more fulfilling life. It doesn’t matter how these people constructing their dream, but how actually they chase their dream.
