Great Britain was notoriously known as one of the most influential kingdom, even until present time. Not only in the European Continent, Great Britain’s power also spread throughout the rest of the world. They had colonies in Asian border, they also had colonies in Africa, and last but not least, in American Continent. It was quite often for the sake of success, war is prioritized. For many years, Great Britain had involved in series of wars which led them to total domination, they had strong controls over politic and economy as well as culture.

But war always comes with the price. Great Britain is in danger for deep debt regarding their participation in numerous wars. One of the most shocking in terms of amount money spent was the Seven Years War. The parliament of Great Britain had to find a way to gather money, in order to fill up the debt. For them, the idea of raising money could be done from a lot of ways, and one of the most effective ways was with the involvement of Colonies. One of the most famous ways of collecting money is from revenue based duties. Actually there are some duties given to the colonies, and Townshend Act remains as one of the most known duties which is memorable due for the series of event occurring after the Townshend Act itself passed by the parliament of Great Britain.

The Townshend Act was initiated by Charles Townshend, the Chancellor of Exchequer. The Townshend Act consisted from a lot of act included, and every act had different duties. This act was introduced to the Parliament of Great Britain by Townshend, in order to raise £40.000 (The Townshend Revenue Act, www.ushistory.org, accessed on March 10th 2014). The taxed items were glass, paint, oil, lead, paper, and tea, because all of these items were imported to Great Britain. The Townshend Act was introduced to the British Colonies in North America on 1767. Not only for raising some amount of money, the Townshend Act also intended for the Colonies to defray the imperial expenses. The Townshend Act was regarded as a tool to force Colonies abides and remains loyal to Great Britain.

But for the colonies the idea behind raising tax was not acceptable. It was concerned (by most of Americans) as an abuse of power (Townshend Act, www.history.com, accessed on March 10th 2014). The Americans felt that the duties from Townshend Act only costs them, giving them harm and incriminates them. It becomes clear that the Townshend Act had a very powerful impact, because after this act introduced, the Colonies had to do everything in order to keep survived, which is why the number of smuggler increased. These smugglers brought contraband goods, which came mostly from France. It was a reaction from the Colonies because the price of imported goods from British rose due the duties from Townshend Act. When the number of smuggler become more and more considerable, “Customs officials received bonuses for every convicted smuggler, so there were obvious incentives to capture Americans” (9d. The Townshend Act, www.ushistory.org, accessed on March 10th 2014). This condition leads Colonies to be rebellious, in order to bring back the justice. Many of famous events occurred after the implementation of Townshend Act, such as Boston Massacre. The American Revolution was actually based on the strike against British Parliament.

The Townshend Act was known as one of the most shocking decision made by British Parliament. Many historians believe that Townshend Act used by British Parliament in order to make Colonies obedient. The Townshend Act finally became legacy for the political system of the United States, the fact is nowadays it becomes a part of United States political history and remains as one of the most memorable events in the History of United States.
