“I think it no accident that most of those emigrating to America in the 19th century identified with the democratic party. We are a heterogonous party made up of American of diverse background.” –Barbara Jordan–

Barbara Charline Jordan was born on February 21, 1936 in Houston, Texas. She died on January 17, 1996 (aged 56) in Austin, Texas. Barbara was the first black African-American woman who successfully elected to the Texas Senate. She failed at her first campaign in 1962 for Texas House of Representatives, but later in 1966 she succeeded to become Texas Senate. Barbara Jordan was also the first black African-American woman giving speech at the Democratic National Convention. Barbara got a lot of awards and honor for her work and willingness for being so vocal and brave, fighting for human rights and justice for black African-American people. As a member of Democratic Party, Barbara put the diversity and distinction on the highest level. She would be pleased if a lot people, especially from different kinds of ethnic groups, were willing to join her party. For Barbara, there was no such thing as black or white people in United States.

The above Barbara Jordan’s quote reflects some of American Political Heritage System which is still relevant with the present condition. United States of America (USA) respects the diversity of their society, because the society of USA is so heterogonous and comes with a lot distinctive characteristic. The fact is, there are a lot of ethnic groups in United States, such as Indians (the original ethnic group in USA), Hispanic, Anglo Saxon, African-American and so much more. They can live in harmony.

What kind of moral value can we learn from Barbara Jordan’s quote? From her quote, we can learn how we should honor the people around us. We must see the world as one whole unit, in which everyone one of us is part of it. Everyone should treat somebody else as a brother or sister. We are all the same. So, it’s our duty to respect and honor each other for good. One last thing, just remember, there always beauty in diversity.
